The installation of invasive medical devices such as catheters favors bacteria to adhere to their surface and form a biofilm (community of structured bacterial cells embedded in a polymer matrix). This biofilm structure is associated to increased resistance to antibiotics, and results in hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections.

Very few available solutions exist and are not totally effective. The development of invasive medical devices coated with polypeptoids (anti-biofilm molecules) could meet an unmet medical need.

An initial series of experiments resulted in polypeptoid covalently bound to silicone surface using plasma technology. The coated polypeptoid showed antibacterial activity.

Polypeptoids are being developed as an advanced generation of disinfectants owing their immediate action (bacteria are killed within minutes) and their on demand broad-spectrum anti-microbial activity.
